Shogoji - Temple during Summer 2006, 2008
Reduction LinocutTwo plates, 8 colorsEdition of 8 (unique state)This series evolved from my trip to Japan, staying in a 800 year old Zen monastery in the mountains of Kyushu during the hot Summer. A beautiful environment, quiet, lush with overgrowth. I was very taken by the large black butterflies that were at home under the green canopy. They became metaphor for the communication between my partner and I via letters while he was away, as he was in the Monastery for seven weeks before I arrived. Also many references (butterflies) to Dharma, chaos, detachment. The prints were a complicated process of using two plates which utilised both top and bottom. Ink was sometimes applied only to half each time it was run through the press, and I varied the rotation of them to form two different images (see Bell Tower). Evidence of the other image can be seen in the form of a ghost image on the other half of the print.
